NFL draft pick Trevor Lawrence converts his signing bonus tocrypto-currencies

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was selected Thursday night by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 6ft 6in 220lb man has partnered with cryptocurrency platform Blockfolio, where he reportedly converted his sign-up bonus into cryptocurrencies. Lawrence tweeted last week: I am happy to announce that I have joined Blockfolio. I am very happy to help bring these two worlds together. He also said:

When it came to my cryptocurrency portfolio, I wanted to find a long-term partner in this sector that I could trust.

According to Dealbook, the quarterback’s first payment was made entirely in cryptocurrency tokens, which were transferred directly to his Blockchain account. Although the company did not disclose the terms of the deal, a spokesman noted that Lawrence’s signing bonus was already worth more Sunday than when he deposited it Friday night. The publication adds that future payments will be made in Lawrence’s chosen combination of dollars and cryptocurrencies.

The payment, which was received by the account on Friday, was reportedly converted into three cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Etherium (ETH) and Solana (SOL).

The amount of Lawrence’s signing bonus was not disclosed, but Spotrac estimates it at $24.1 million.

In addition, Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which acquired the blockchain last year, tweeted on Thursday: Congratulations on number one, Trevor Lawrence. We have a surprise for you – check your Blockfolio account to receive $25k in SOL. Tonight is all about crypto-currencies, thanks to you.

A growing number of professional athletes are choosing to be paid in bitcoins. After Russell Okung, who transferred half of his $13 million salary into BTC, Kansas City Chiefs NFL player Sean Culkin transferred 100% of his salary into Bitcoin. Earlier this month, NBA team Sacramento Kings said it would offer players the option of being paid in cryptocurrencies.
